THE CASE FOR INITIATING DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS:
ADVANCE CARE PLANNING AND GOALS OF CARE
Dr. Peter Zalan is an anesthesiologist and an intensive care physician for over 30 years. He is also Past President of the Medical Staff at Health Sciences North and a member of the hospital’s Ethics Committee. He is currently involved with Health Sciences North’s project to improve decision making with respect to health issues -- better communication between patients, families and physicians.
Dr. Zalan writes a column for Northern Life on health care issues, and has a reputation for speaking and writing bluntly about the perilous state of the healthcare system. He states that meeting the approaching demographic wave of elderly patients means fixing the home-care system.
